Grass Valley, Ca. is a historic northern Gold Country city, and is the largest city in the western region of Nevada County, Ca.  It is roughly 2500 foot elevation situated in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Located 75 miles from the state capitol in Sacramento, and 90 miles west of Reno, Nevada.

Grass Valley, which was originally known as Boston Ravine, was later named Centerville.  In 1951 when the post office was established it was renamed Grass Valley.

Grass Valley is the home to two of the richest gold mines in California the Empire Mine and North Star Mine.  Many of the miners came from Cornwall, England known as the sister city of Grass Valley.  The Cornish heritage is celebrated with events such as the annual Cornish Christmas and St. Piran’s Day celebration. There are a few restaurants in town that special in Pasties which is a Cornish favorite.

Grass Valley, California has plenty of things to do for all ages and interest.  There is the Empire Mine museum you can visit or where you can hike, bike or ride horses on the many trails. North Star Mine also has a museum. Rollins Lake where you can fish, boat, or camp.  Alta Sierra and Nevada County Golf courses for the golf enthusiast.

Grass Valley has lots of trails for hiking and biking, many restaurants for fine eating with an abundance of different cuisine.  Plenty of activities at the Grass Valley fairgrounds and one of the best fairs in the state.

Center for the Arts in downtown Grass Valley often have big name bands and entertainment. Many of the local wineries have wine tasting on a regular basis and often have live music for your enjoyment.

Grass Valley has warm to hot, dry summers, and wet, cool, rainy winters. Summer is very dry but thunderstorms may occur. The winter rains contribute to a heavy fuel-loading of brush and grass, which dry out during the summer, posing a wildfire hazard. Snow occurs at times.
